However, to some nursing a cute dog is not easy as they suffer from dog allergies. A dog allergy is known as an allergic condition caused by pollen, dander, dust, saliva and urine or other allergens which have been present on the fur. It has been discovered that almost 15% of the population is suffering from allergy to dogs.

At times, we wonder why dander and other dog-related stuff have ill effects on us. It is quite important to understand that people with allergies have very sensitive immune system which is the reason why they tend to overreact to inoffensive substances such as dog dander and the like. Most often the coughing, sneezing and watery eyes are the adverse effects of the body’s effort to break down the allergen.

Dog allergies can be cured by some standard allergy drugs prescribed by doctors.  These drugs include decongestants which helps alleviate congestion as well as to minimize the risk of swelling in the nose.  Over-the-counter decongestants frequently prescribed are Allegra-D and Sudafed. Antihistamines are also prescribed; these help bar the ill effects of chemicals which bring about the symptoms of dog allergy. Instances of these include nasal spray Astelin, available over-the-counter are Benadryl, Allegra, Zyrtec and Claritin. Meanwhile, there are also available steroids prescribed known as Nasonex and Flonase sprays.

It is essential to note that some allergy shots are just alternative for people suffering from dog allergies and they might not function well for everyone. The treatment for this condition usually takes several years; however, these may greatly help people with dog allergies. It will be a wise move to consult your doctor regarding the pros and cons of this condition.

Of course, if you know that you are prone to dog allergies, it is best to keep way from any allergens that may trigger your allergies to attack.
